Porfirio EOS BudgetQuote RedSPRINGFIELD — After the Senate’s approval of the Fiscal Year 2026 state budget, State Senator Mike Porfirio (D-Lyons Township) released the following statement:

“This budget prioritizes the critical needs of everyday Illinoisans and our commitment to the programs that support education, health care and transportation.

“We are keeping our promise to fully funding the evidence-based funding formula that supports schools across the state equitably, while allocating to need-based financial assistance through MAP grants to help students attain higher education. Our community colleges are also supported by this budget; they are a key resource for communities that I will always advocate for.

“This budget makes real investments to the veteran community in Illinois. Upholding a $6 million commitment to the Breakthrough Therapies for Veteran Suicide Advisory Council, and funding the Illinois Veterans Grant, will back our nation’s heroes as they navigate disproportionate challenges.

“The inclusion of more than $36 million from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund to the Illinois Department of Transportation cannot be overlooked. These will protect our citizens from difficult crossings in high traffic areas or railroads.

“With uncertainty at the federal level, we must continue to support our residents where they need it the most. This budget, while not perfect, will keep the systems Illinoisans rely on. I will continue to work with constituents in the 11th District to ensure their voices are heard.”
